Kirsty Hopkins triumphs as Hagar in Sally Beamish’s new opera at Presteigne

"Kirsty Hopkins’ clear-toned and affecting Hagar"  Richard Morrison, The Times

I took my daughter Becca to the Presteigne Festival last night for the premiere of Sally Beamish’s new opera Hagar in the Wilderness with Kirsty Hopkins singing the title role.  Kirsty gave a beautiful performance, gentle and moving but expressing the pain and anguish of Hagar, who is banished from her home and abandons her baby because she cannot bear to watch him die.  Sally’s music perfectly caught the mood of the script – look out for further performances on tour in the autumn, details on Nova Music’s website.

The Beamish was followed by Britten’s Curlew River - my second Madwoman in two days (sung brilliantly by Mark Milhofer) as I was in London on Tuesday for Clare McCaldin’s brilliant show Vivienne.
