Deborah Miles-Johnson

A thoroughly established artist, Deborah Miles-Johnson has worked with most of the world’s leading conductors including Sir Simon Rattle performing Stravinsky’s Requiem Canticles. She has frequently broadcast for the BBC including the lead role in Handel’s Il Parnasso in Festa whilst El Amor Brujo by De Falla with the New London Chamber Orchestra was broadcast by Classic FM.  Highlights of her many performances are Bach’s St Matthew Passion with The English Concert in concerts around Europe, Istanbul and Japan, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall and a performance of Das Rheingold (Fricka) in concert in Oxford. She also performed the little-known Messa per Rossini (by thirteen Italian composers including Verdi) in St Albans Abbey.

Active in the contemporary repertoire, Deborah took the part of Caroline in Henze’s Elegy for young Lovers for Radio France. Other performances include the premiere of Brian Elias’s Laments with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jean Barraqué’s …au dela du hasard with Klangforum in Vienna, Satyagraha by Philip Glass at the Festival Hall and one of the secretaries in the first London performance of Nixon in China by John Adams with Kent Nagano and the LSO at the Barbican. She made her Wigmore Hall debut performing Upon Silence by George Benjamin with the viol group Fretwork following performances in Geneva.

Commercial recordings include an excerpt from Carmen with Gerald Finley on his recent recital disc and the Missa Brevis in D and B flat by Mozart with St Albans Cathedral Choir under Andrew Lucas for Naxos.  She recorded the role of Betty Doxy in the Britten/Gay arrangement of The Beggars Opera, one of the Converse in the EMI recording of Suor Angelica and Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater, Maxwell Davies’ Resurrection, and Carl Rütti’s Magnificat.

Her diverse musical life includes performing on the sound track of many major films including the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the latestShrek andPirates of the Caribbean films. She assists as vocal coach to many of the top London choirs and gives vocal workshops to choirs around the country and abroad.  Deborah is Chorus Master for Chelsea Opera Group and conductor of her own choir, the prize winning Imperial Male Voice Choir.
